A 4-day hike to Mount Kenya sounds like an exhilarating adventure! Mount Kenya is the second-highest peak in Africa and offers stunning scenery, diverse ecosystems, and challenging trails. Here’s a suggested itinerary for your 4-day hike:

Day 1: Naro Moru Gate to Met Station

  • Start your hike at Naro Moru Gate, the most popular entry point for climbers.
  • Trek through the forest zone, enjoying the lush vegetation and wildlife.
  • Reach Met Station (3,050 meters) where you’ll spend the night in basic mountain huts or tents.

Day 2: Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp

  • Continue ascending through the moorland zone, characterized by open grasslands and giant lobelias.
  • Pass by the vertical bog and the famous “vertical bog” section.
  • Arrive at Mackinder’s Camp (4,200 meters), situated just below the distinctive peaks of Batian and Nelion.
  • Spend the night at the campsite, acclimatizing to the altitude.

Day 3: Mackinder’s Camp to Point Lenana and back to Shipton’s Camp

  • Wake up early for the pre-dawn summit attempt of Point Lenana (4,985 meters), the third-highest peak on Mount Kenya.
  • Trek to the summit to catch the sunrise over the African plains, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
  • Descend back to Mackinder’s Camp for breakfast.
  • Continue descending to Shipton’s Camp (4,200 meters), passing through the Teleki Valley.
  • Spend the night at Shipton’s Camp, resting after the summit and enjoying the views.

Day 4: Shipton’s Camp to Naro Moru Gate

  • Descend through the Mackinder’s Valley, passing by the unique flora and fauna of the alpine zone.
  • Reach Naro Moru Gate, where you’ll finish your hike.
  • Celebrate your accomplishment and reminisce about the breathtaking experiences you had during your Mount Kenya adventure.
