Differences between a cheetah and a leopard

By Patrick Gathu Feb 13, 2024

Cheetahs and leopards are both large cats belonging to the Felidae family, but they have several differences:

1. **Physical Appearance**:
– **Cheetahs**: Cheetahs are slender and have a lightweight build compared to leopards. They have distinctive black spots scattered across their tan-colored fur. They also have tear marks running from the corner of their eyes down to the sides of their mouth.
– **Leopards**: Leopards are more robust and stocky in build compared to cheetahs. Their fur is characterized by rosette-shaped spots, which are larger and more densely packed than the spots on cheetahs. They lack the prominent tear marks found on cheetahs.

2. **Habitat**:
– **Cheetahs**: Cheetahs primarily inhabit open grasslands and savannas. They prefer areas with tall grass where they can utilize their incredible speed for hunting.
– **Leopards**: Leopards are more adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, mountains, deserts, and grasslands. They are excellent climbers and often rest or store their kills in trees.

3. **Hunting Style**:
– **Cheetahs**: Cheetahs are built for speed and are the fastest land animals, capable of reaching speeds up to 60-70 miles per hour in short bursts. They rely on their speed to chase down prey like antelopes and gazelles.
– **Leopards**: Leopards are more ambush predators. They stalk their prey stealthily and pounce on them from close range. They have remarkable strength and are capable of dragging their kills up into trees to keep them safe from scavengers.

4. **Social Behavior**:
– **Cheetahs**: Cheetahs are typically solitary animals, although siblings may stay together for a few months after leaving their mother.
– **Leopards**: Leopards are solitary animals as well, except during the mating season or when a female is raising cubs.

5. **Range**:
– **Cheetahs**: Cheetahs are primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa, although a small population also exists in Iran.
– **Leopards**: Leopards have a wider range, spanning across sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of China.

These are some of the key differences between cheetahs and leopards, though there are other nuances in their behavior and physiology as well.
